How to properly prepare your motorcycle for the season
With the arrival of spring, many motorcyclists are eager to get out on their bikes and explore the roads. But before you head out, it's important to make sure your bike is roadworthy by following a few simple steps.
Tips and important steps after storage
The season begins and it’s the perfect time to take your motorbike and explore the magnificent roads of your province while enjoying this feeling of freedom. However, before hitting the road, it’s important to prepare your motorcycle to ensure its safety and avoid any trouble during your journey. Here are our tips and important steps to follow to properly prepare your motorcycle.
Step 1: Check the battery
Check the condition of your battery and replace it if necessary. The average battery life is 3 to 6 years. Also make sure you have it plugged into a smart charger during the winter.
Step 2: Check engine oil
It is important to change the oil before storing your motorcycle to prevent oxidation in the engine. This practice ensures long-term performance and safety. If you didn't change the oil before winter, check the oil level before starting it up again. Use the dipstick to verify the level, add oil if necessary, and ensure that the oil is clear and free of impurities. If the oil appears dark or contains contaminants, it is recommended to perform an oil change.
Step 3: Check the fuel level
It is recommended to keep the tank full of gasoline during storage to prevent rust and oxidation of the gasoline. Use a fuel stabilizer before storing your motorcycle. If the gasoline level is low, fill it with clean gasoline. Use the fuel gauge to check the level.
Step 4: Check the tires
Check the condition of your motorcycle's tires. It is important to ensure that they are inflated to the recommended pressure to achieve optimal handling of your motorcycle. Also, make sure they don't show signs of excessive wear or damage.
You can use a "Pressure Gauge and Tread Depth Indicator" to check the tire thickness; it should not be less than 1/8 inch. It’s recommended that they are checked by a qualified technician. If any issues are detected, it’s important to replace them or have them repaired by a professional to ensure your safety on the road.
Step 5: Check the coolant
Check the coolant level and ensure it is between the minimum and maximum markers on the reservoir.
Step 6: Check the brakes
Inspect the condition of your motorcycle's brakes. Ensure that both the brake rotors and pads are in good shape, displaying no signs of excessive wear. Should you encounter any issues, seek assistance from a professional for repair or replacement.
Step 7: Check the drive chain or belt
For the chain, start by cleaning it and inspecting its condition. If it's in good shape, lubricate it. Belts don't require any special maintenance, just perform a visual inspection to check their condition.
Next, ensure that the drive chain or belt is properly adjusted to prevent future repairs and prolong the lifespan of components.
Step 8: Check Suspension Components
Inspect the fork tubes and shock absorber shaft for any signs of oil leakage. If you notice any oil leaks, it's essential to perform maintenance on the suspension to ensure its proper functioning.
Step 9: Check the lights
Make sure all your motorcycle lights are working properly to guarantee your safety on the road.
By following these steps, you'll prepare your motorcycle safely for your first ride without any maintenance-related issues. Just as crucial is properly storing your snowmobile after winter, as highlighted in our article "Practical Tips for Safely Storing Your Snowmobile." Remember to schedule regular maintenance with a qualified mechanic to keep your motorcycle in optimal condition. Enjoy the season safely with a well-prepared motorcycle!
