How to Properly Store Your Motorcycle for Winter ?

As the first chills of winter set in, it's time to prepare your motorcycle for its winter rest. Properly storing your machine is essential to preserve it and keep it in perfect condition until the riding season returns. In this article, we will explore the key steps to effectively store it during the winter.

Prepare Your Motorcycle for Winter : Discover Crucial Steps for Safe Storage

I. Choice of Location

Choosing the location to store your motorcycle is the first crucial step. Opt for a dry and well-ventilated place. Avoid places exposed to harsh weather conditions or excessive humidity. A heated garage is ideal, but if not possible, make sure at least that your motorcycle is under cover to protect it from the elements.

If you don't have a shed or garage, it's possible to rent a space to store a motorcycle or any other type of personal vehicle. At ADM SPORT, we offer this service in Quebec. For more information, contact us at 1-800-463-4340

II. Battery Maintenance

Your motorcycle's battery deserves special attention during winter. Before storage, make sure it's fully charged. Then, disconnect it to prevent unnecessary discharges. The use of a battery maintenance charger is recommended to keep the battery in perfect condition throughout the storage period.

III. Change the Oil and Filter

Even if you don’t plan to ride during the winter, it’s recommended to change the oil and filter before storing the bike. Used oil contains contaminants that can damage the engine during storage. Fresh oil will protect the internal parts from oxidation.

IV. The Full Tank

Before storing your motorcycle, fill its fuel tank. Since fuel evaporates, the fuel level decreases even if the engine is off.

The presence of fuel in the tank prevents its interior surface from remaining in contact with air and moisture caused by temperature changes. A full tank of gas may seem costly, but less so than a tank attacked by rust !

Also, add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from aging and becoming unusable.

V. Deep Cleaning

Before storing your motorcycle, perform a thorough cleaning. Wash it carefully to remove dirt, insects, and any other residue. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas.

Use warm water, mild soap specifically designed for motorcycles, and a soft-bristle brush for meticulous cleaning. A thorough wash will help prevent corrosion and maintain the aesthetics of your motorcycle.

Your motorcycle is a true mechanical gem. Several internal parts (valves, spark plugs, pipes) contain deposits that should also be cleaned from time to time. Don't hesitate to disassemble a part to clean it and apply the appropriate product. Some motorcycle models also have a fuel tap that can be closed to preserve the conduits.

VI. Lubricating Moving Parts

Apply lubricant to the chain, cables, levers, and other moving parts to prevent them from seizing during the winter. This will help prevent rust and ensure they function properly when the season starts again.

VII. Application of Wax and Resting Stand

After cleaning, apply a layer of quality wax to the body of your motorcycle. The wax will act as a protective barrier against moisture and external elements. Additionally, place a stand designed for this purpose under your motorcycle to avoid overloading the tires, which can cause deformation over time.

VIII. Use of a Quality Protective Cover

Finally, cover your motorcycle with a quality protective cover. Make sure the cover is breathable to avoid condensation inside. It will protect your motorcycle from dust, debris, and potential scratches.

By following these steps, you can be sure that your motorcycle will be in excellent working condition when you're ready to hit the road again in spring. Meticulous maintenance during winter will extend the lifespan of your motorcycle and allow you to enjoy many seasons of safe riding.
